THE CHALLENGE02 / 08

How do you market a community without making it feel like marketing?

In 2022, OCGrace's young-adult ministry had a small core group and limited digital visibility. But the bigger challenge wasn't simply awareness. For a young adult discovering a church community for the first time, there are a lot of questions behind the click:

  • Will I know anyone?
  • Is this actually for people my age?
  • What happens when I show up?
  • Will I belong here?
THE STRATEGY03 / 08

Show the community, not just the calendar.

01 · Make discovery easy

Create short-form and shareable content capable of reaching young adults who had never interacted with OCGrace before.

02 · Show what it feels like

Use photos, Reels, recaps, candid moments, and community-focused storytelling to help someone understand the experience before attending.

03 · Give people a reason to return

Build recognizable programming with recurring experiences such as The Ark, Genesis, Prayerhood, small groups, worship nights, social events, and service opportunities.

04 · Connect online discovery to offline participation

Social performance was never the final KPI. The real question was: Are people showing up?

THE CONTENT STRATEGY04 / 08

From announcements to storytelling.

FORMATWHAT IT INCLUDES
DiscoveryReels · short-form video · relatable content · shareable moments
InformationEvent announcements · monthly calendars · program information
CommunityEvent recaps · photos · baptisms · celebrations · candid moments
IdentityConsistent messaging · recurring programs · ministry personality
ConnectionCalls to attend · invitations · reminders · opportunities to participate

This allowed the account to serve two audiences simultaneously: the people already in the community and the people who hadn't found us yet.

THE DIGITAL RESULTS05 / 08

A small account reaching well beyond its follower count.

  • From approximately 160 followers in October 2022, the account grew to 581 followers by September 2026: +263% follower growth.
  • But follower count tells only part of the story.
  • With only 581 followers, the account generated more than 405K views in one month, showing that the content was reaching far beyond the ministry's existing social audience.

30 days: August 31 – September 29, 2026

  • 295,807 viewers
  • 53,454 interactions
  • 97% of views from non-followers
FROM REACH TO COMMUNITY06 / 08
The metric that mattered most happened offline.
ABOUT 10 MEMBERS IN 2022 → 40+ TODAY · ABOUT 15 ACTIVE REGULARLY · ROUGHLY 4× GROWTH
BUILDING MORE THAN AN AUDIENCE07 / 08

Social media became the front door.

Social media wasn't the only reason that happened; community growth is the result of leadership, programming, relationships, word of mouth, and the people who continue showing up. But digital marketing became an important part of the discovery journey.

  • A Reel creates awareness.
  • The profile shows what the community feels like.
  • An event gives someone a reason to come.
  • A conversation gives them a reason to stay.
  • Eventually, a follower can become part of the community.
MY ROLE08 / 08
Digital Strategy

Social strategy · audience growth · campaign planning · content direction

Content

Reels · graphics · captions · event promotion · storytelling

Brand

Visual direction · program positioning · messaging · digital identity

Events

Event concepts · promotion · programming · community experiences

Young-adult leadership · engagement · retention · relationship building

The takeaway: Reach gets someone's attention. Community gives them a reason to stay.

Growing from roughly 160 to 581 Instagram followers matters. Reaching 405,000 people in a month matters. Growing from around 10 community members to more than 40 matters even more. Turn discovery into connection, and connection into community.
